What is Periscope?
Periscope is a live video streaming app for iOS and Android developed jointly by Kayvon Beykpour and Joe Bernstein. The startup behind the app was purchased by Twitter for a reported $100 million in March 2015. Last March 26, 2015, Twitter officially relaunched the application on iOS version of Periscope in March this year and now, the live video streaming app is also available on Android.
Twitter’s new live broadcasting app Periscope is a useful app for people who want to broadcast their videos to friends and family or to the public.

The app is great for sharing things happening around the world, such as a sporting event, or to an individual, such as one's graduation. The application allows users to either watch or create videos on their phones which can be watched in real time by others. Periscope is different in many aspects from other live streaming apps, in Periscope everything is instantaneous and you can interact with your audience while the broadcast is going on. Streams are only stored on the servers for 24 hours before being deleted, although you can save them to your device if you want to keep them longer and share with friends.
The App allows Viewers who tune in can follow you, comment in your live stream and “heart” your scope. Hearts in Periscope are equivalent to favorites on Twitter or likes on Facebook— they measure your popularity. While your scope is live, anyone can tune in to see what’s going on. You and your viewers can also share your live scope through Twitter to reach an even wider audience.
Periscope Broadcasters vs Viewers
For broadcasters, Periscope lets you share an experience with others. Press a button, and instantly notify your followers that you’re live. Whether you’re witnessing your daughter’s first steps or a newsworthy event, Periscope offers an audience and the power of a shared experience. Most mobile broadcasting tools feel far from live. Broadcasters on Periscope are directly connected to their audience, able to feel their presence and interact. Going live on Periscope means more than a blinking red dot.
Periscope main features:
• REPLAY: When your broadcast is over, you can make it available for replay so viewers can watch later. Viewers can replay your broadcast with comments and hearts to relive the full experience. Replays currently last 24 hours. You can delete your replay at any time.
• PRIVATE: If you want to broadcast to specific people, press the lock icon before going live and choose who you want to invite to your broadcast.
• TWITTER: You can choose to share your Periscope broadcasts on Twitter by tapping the bird icon before you start broadcasting. When you go live, you’ll tweet a link so that your Twitter followers can watch on the web (or in the app)
• MANAGE NOTIFICATIONS: Periscope will suggest people for you to follow based on your Twitter network. You can always follow new people, or unfollow them if you don’t want to be notified when they go live. You can also adjust notification preferences in Periscope Settings (in Profile)
• HEARTS: Periscope keeps track of how many hearts you get from your viewers. The more hearts, the higher you get in the “Most Loved” list.

Download Periscope App
Android owners using Version 4.4 (KitKat) and above can download Periscope from Google Play. Periscope on Android has all the same core features that Periscope users have come to love: start a public or private broadcast, choose to allow comments from just those you follow, and interact with a broadcaster by chatting or sending hearts. There are a few things that are unique to Android:
• The application features a Material-inspired design that should feel familiar but modern to Android users
• Android users have granular control over additional Push Notification settings, such as “First Time Broadcast notifications” (when somebody you follow on Twitter broadcasts on Periscope for the first time) and “Share notifications” (when somebody you follow on Periscope shares somebody else’s broadcast).
• Periscope on Android offers you a “Resume notification” so you can keep watching where you left off in case your broadcast gets interrupted (by a phone call or message)
• Replays are saved without requiring the broadcaster to upload a file. This should save broadcasters lots of time and preserve precious mobile data allowance!
